The Festering Dark is one of the three new strongholds in Nahantu that were added with the Vessel of Hatred addon.
And I must say: The strongholds are way more difficult than in the base game. Especially the boss fights are challenging. In a group the fights are probably a lot easier, but I tried to beat them solo. The Festering Dark is quite intersting, because you are mor less running around in the dark. You have to pickup light globes and follow them to free more paths.
And the boss fights also plays with this mechanic. The boss (Maleficium) is only vulnerable in the light of the Warding Braziers and turns them off in regular intervals. You have to turn the light on again in order to defeat the boss.
You have to conquer the stronghold for the "The Pit of Anguish" quest as well.
